Why?
Jesus did. (Luke 3:21)
Jesus said to. (Matthew 28:16-20) God sees you obey him. You experience obeying
God. You get used to saying you belong to Jesus. You have become open with people you know that
you have become a follower of Jesus from your heart. (If you are in a dangerous situation,
perhaps you can get very wet and tell the Lord in your heart, you are being baptized and then
later, when it is safer, get baptized publicly, if the opportunity arrives. God understands.)
I became a Christian in April of 1968. I was baptized in Bermuda while on the first Campus Crusade
for Christ spring break outreach there in 1971. I stayed in the assistant pastor's home of a church there.
He asked me if I'd ever been baptized. I said I was as a baby. I learned for the first time I
needed to be baptized publicly as a thinking adult. I was baptized by being pushed straight down
into the water. At first I pushed against the hand pushing me down. Then I remembered I was
getting baptized and I let go. I got re-baptized in July 2001. Our church was having baptisms in
a swimming pool at one member's home. The pastor in the water said, "Is there anyone else who
wants to be baptized?" All of a sudden I knew the Lord wanted me to submit to him even if it
meant I was going to be killed. I raised my hand. The pastor was not recognizing my raised hand
because he knows I am already a Christian a long time. But it was the Lord so I got into the pool.
This was July 29th, just a few weeks before September 11th. I died again to this world
in that pool in that moment.
When I think of baptism, I think of
Romans 6:4-5: "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that,
just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him
in his resurrection. (Amplified Bible)
Get ready for some changes!
Some things are going to leave. Loneliness, you're now in a big family, the family of God.
Some things are going to come. Peace. You have made your peace with God through the Prince of Peace.
Some of your friends and relatives will be so happy. Some of your friends and relatives will
think you are going through a "phase" and will be curious when they discover it's permanent.
Some of your friends and relatives will join you, either now or in 10 years. There will be some
things you don't want to do anymore. God is living inside of you now and you're feeling him. If
you don't feel anything, don't worry at all. You may have become numb due to many factors, some
of that may need to wear off first. Satan, who hates God, now hates you. I can save you a lot of
time. He pulls the same trick on everyone. He will tell you that you are unworthy. Yes, you
are unworthy, but Christ has made you worthy. He will tell you that when you do something wrong,
that you have lost your salvation. You just say this, "Satan, Jesus said that no one, not even
you can snatch me out of his hand. I resist you in the name of Jesus and you must flee." Then
you say to God, "I am sorry I did "X;" Please forgive me." He promised
if we confess our sins, he will be
faithful and just to forgive our sins. (I John 1:9)
He is probably not going to send you to Africa today if ever. If
he does, there's probably something awaiting you in Africa that is so
wonderful, you'll thank
him for it over and over. So just enjoy your new life in Christ!
Find fellowship with Bible-believing Christians
This may not be easy. I advise calling the 700 Club at 1 800 700 7000 and asking
them for a church they recommend where you live. If you are overseas, ask God. If he leads you
to a home Bible study, this is fine. If things just don't seem right at a church, leave. You can
avoid much hurt by being ready to move on if the Bible and the living God aren't appreciated.
